At the end of the day, Twitter’s main utility for me was that it allowed me to get curated, specialized news from as close to the original source as possible.
Of the many problems with how Musk is running the site is that breaking the former verification regime completely undermined the above utility. Being able to sift through credible and uncredible sources, while not impossible, became much more difficult and not worth my time.
The determining factor in which users’ content gained the most visibility changed to who paid the most, instead of the informal but the Galtonian wisdom of the crowd model that defined old Twitter.
Telegram had more or less replaced the utility that old Twitter provided for me. Its siloed feed allows me to choose my sources, not for low-quality paid sources to bid for my attention, like on X.
